How to Set Up an Ergonomic Workspace for Productivity

It doesn’t matter whether you are working from home or an office – your workspace and setup matter the most if you want to be productive. So, you have a desk on which you have your monitor, mouse, keyboard, phone, plant, and a chair. 

Now, the problem might start with the fact that your desk isn’t really built for you. Think about it: you are spending eight hours a day reaching or slouching, which can cause pain and bad posture.

So, you want to set up your workspace ergonomically to feel comfortable and productive.

Adjust Your Chair

The first step is to adjust your chair. The average desk height is nearly thirty inches tall. Now, it could be too tall or too short for you. This is where the chair comes in. The first thing you should do is to adjust the height of your chair. When you are at it, make sure your elbows are bent to 90 degrees.

If your feet aren’t touching the floor, it can become a real issue, which is why you want to take a footstool. If you don’t have a footrest, you can use a box, too. 

Adjust Your Monitor

Ideally, you want your monitor close enough to be able to read at arm’s length. This way, you will be able to read what is on the monitor without having to strain your eyes or having to bend forward and adopt a bad posture. 

So, to adjust the monitor, you want to raise the monitor up until the top of the screen is at eye level. If you have a monitor that is not adjustable in height, you can place something underneath it, such as reams of paper. 

Adjust Two Monitors 

If you work on two monitors, you should consider how you use them. If you have a primary monitor, make sure it is positioned directly in front of you. If you use both monitors equally, line them up in a way that you are in the middle of the two monitors. If you have a laptop, you can use a kickstand to raise it to the proper height. Then, you can proceed to attach an external keyboard and mouse to it. 

For an extra boost of productivity, you can have your favorite quote written in vinyl lettering and paste it on the wall right in front of you. This way, you will set up the surroundings along with your desk for better productivity. 

Adjust the Mouse and Keyboard

The next step to set up an ergonomic workspace involves your mouse and keyboard. Your hands end up on the desk, and that is where your keyboard should be. Place your mouse right next to the keyboard as you should be moving your elbow instead of your shoulders as a way to prevent strain, overuse, and pain.

The key to a productive desk is that you should not move to access your tools. Also, set up your phone in an ideal position. However, place the phone on your non-writing side so you don’t have to cradle it to your shoulder.
